What changes the price of an ounce

• Brand and tier. Top-shelf flower costs more than value flower. Compare Olswell's house brands side by side with the other brands on the menu.
• Freshness. A recent batch usually smells and smokes better than an old one.
• The deal running that day. A sale price changes what you actually pay.
• Lab testing. Michigan requires licensed stores to sell lab-tested products, and that cost is built into every legal product.
• Tax. Michigan adds a 10% excise tax and a 6% sales tax to adult-use purchases, so budget for it when you plan your cash.

What should I look for in an ounce?

Start with your eyes and nose. Good flower looks frosty with trichomes, with no mold, mildew, or bugs, and it smells fresh: fruity, floral, earthy, or herbal. Then read the label for the THC percentage, a batch number, and a test or harvest date, and ask when the batch was packaged.

A few more checks:

• Structure. Well-formed, intact buds usually travel and store better than shake or crumbled flower.
• Smell. A flat, generic, or musty smell means old or poorly stored flower, whatever the price.
• Consistency. Quality can vary between batches of the same strain, so judge the jar in front of you, not the name on it. The label guide shows what each number means.

How much should I buy at once?

Buy an ounce when you already know you like the flower. If you are trying a new strain, buy a smaller amount first and come back for more. A bigger purchase is only a better deal if the price per gram is lower, so do the math before you commit.

Michigan allows an adult to buy up to 2.5 ounces per transaction. You can carry up to 2.5 ounces in public and keep up to 10 ounces at home. Store flower in an airtight container somewhere cool and dark.
