Michigan Cannabis Tourism: Trip Planning for Visitors

What visitors need to know first

• Age and ID. You must be 21 or older and show a valid government-issued photo ID at every purchase. Out-of-state IDs work.
• Limits. A single purchase is capped at 2.5 ounces, with no more than 15 grams of that as concentrate. You can carry up to 2.5 ounces in public.
• Taxes. Adult-use purchases carry a 10% excise tax plus 6% sales tax.
• Where you can use it. Private property where the owner allows it. Michigan does not authorize public consumption, so beaches, parks, trails, downtown streets, overlooks and festival grounds are out.
• Federal land. National parks and lakeshores, including Sleeping Bear Dunes, ban cannabis outright.
• State lines. Cannabis bought in Michigan must stay in Michigan, even if you are headed to a state where it is legal.
• Driving. Never drive after using cannabis, and never use it in a vehicle, on a boat or on a snowmobile.

Olswell's four stores

Happy Hour takes 20% off the whole shop at Adrian, Traverse City and Kalkaska on each store's own window. Adrian runs Friday 8AM-2PM and Sunday 8AM-12PM. Traverse City and Kalkaska run Monday 5-9 PM and Thursday 9AM-1PM. Grand Rapids does not run Happy Hour. Weekly deals change, so check the live menu.

Where to go by season

• Summer (June to August). Torch Lake and the Sandbar, Traverse City beaches and the Cherry Festival in July, and Grand Rapids festivals. Busiest, so book early.
• Fall (September to October). Fall color, wine harvest on the Leelanau and Old Mission peninsulas, and thinner crowds. See the fall color tour guide.

Regional guides

Lodging and cannabis

Check the cannabis policy before you book, not after you buy.

• Hotels, resorts and bed-and-breakfasts. Most prohibit smoking and vaping, and violating the policy can mean fees. Unless it says otherwise, assume it is not allowed.
• Vacation rentals. More flexible, but policies vary. Read the listing, ask the host and get the answer in writing.
• Camping. Federal land bans cannabis entirely. State parks are public property with their own rules, so do not assume a campsite is a green light. Confirm with the facility.

Using cannabis responsibly on a trip

• Start lower than you would at home. New settings and unfamiliar products can hit differently.
• Many people feel flower and vapes within minutes, while edibles can take an hour or two, so wait before taking more.
• Concentrates are far stronger than flower and not a place to start.
• Use cannabis only on private property, after all driving, boating, hiking or riding is finished for the day.

Sample trips

• Traverse City weekend. Friday: arrive, order ahead and pick up at Olswell, dinner downtown. Saturday: wine country with a designated driver, no cannabis. Sunday: beach, farmers market, head home.
• Torch Lake weekend. Friday: drive up, pick up in Kalkaska, check into your cottage. Saturday: lake day, sober on the water. Sunday: one more morning swim, then depart.
• Grand Rapids weekend. Friday and Saturday: breweries and food, with rides. Sunday: museums or a market and your Olswell pickup on 28th Street.
• Ohio visitors. Make it an overnight in Lenawee County: drive to Adrian, order ahead, pick up, and stay somewhere in Michigan that allows cannabis. Nothing you buy can go back to Ohio, so buy only what you will finish here.
• Winter snowmobile trip. Friday: drive to Kalkaska, check into a lodge. Saturday and Sunday: ride sober. Pick up at Olswell once the sled is put away.
