Keep the two apart

Alcohol and cannabis together are harder to predict than either one alone, and neither belongs behind the wheel. So do the taprooms one day. If you want to shop at Olswell, do it on another day or well apart from any drinking, and use cannabis, if at all, only on private property once your driving is done. Michigan does not authorize public consumption, so breweries, restaurants, parks and the street are all out.

The brewery trail

Grand Rapids has many breweries and taprooms, and most have food or work with food trucks. Check each one's hours, menu and policies before you go. Visit a couple per day so you can enjoy each, and get around by rideshare, a designated driver or on foot where downtown makes that possible. Some breweries are walkable from downtown.

Food

The food scene is tied closely to the brewery scene, with food trucks and full kitchens at many taprooms. Beyond breweries, the city has farm-to-table restaurants, a range of cuisines, casual spots and public markets. Check current listings and hours.

Downtown and museums

Downtown centers on the Grand River, with riverfront parks, pathways and public art, plus cafes, galleries and shopping on foot. Museums include the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum and the Grand Rapids Public Museum. Check each museum's hours and admission.

Where to stay

Grand Rapids has downtown hotels, chain hotels and vacation rentals. Hotels typically prohibit cannabis use, and vacation rentals vary. If you plan to use cannabis, confirm the policy before you book and ask the host.

A two-day plan:

• Day one, the breweries. A late-morning brewery, lunch, a second taproom, dinner downtown. A ride home. No cannabis.
• Day two, museums and the 28th Street stop. A museum in the morning, then your Olswell pickup. Wrap up your driving for the day before any use, and only on private property that allows it.

When to visit

• Summer (June to August): warm weather and outdoor seating, with festivals and events downtown.
• Fall (September to October): fall events and fewer crowds than summer.
• Winter (November to February): cold and snowy, which makes indoor taprooms appealing, with holiday events.
• Spring (March to May): weather improves and outdoor seating returns.
