The Rules at a Glance

• Age and ID: 21 and older, with a valid government-issued photo ID. Out-of-state ID works, and there is no residency requirement.
• Per purchase: up to 2.5 ounces total, no more than 15 grams of that as concentrate. Purchase limits explained.
• Carry and keep: 2.5 ounces on you in public, 10 ounces at home.
• Tax: 10% excise plus 6% sales tax, about 16.6% in all. The tax math.
• Where to use it: private property with the owner's permission. Never in public, never in a vehicle. Where you can use it.
• Driving: never drive impaired.
• State lines: cannabis can't cross them, even between two states where it is legal.

Where to Buy Cannabis in Michigan

Only from a licensed adult-use retailer. Products at licensed stores are lab tested and carry a label with the THC content and a batch number. Olswell runs four adult-use stores:

Every store takes online orders for in-store pickup. Orders are held until the end of the business day, there is no delivery, and Olswell is cash only with an ATM on-site.

What a First Visit Looks Like

Bring a valid government-issued photo ID and cash. Staff check ID at the counter every time, you tell them it is your first visit, and they walk you through what is on the shelf. What Does Cannabis Cost After Tax?

About 16.6% more than the shelf price. A $100 product adds $10 of excise tax, then 6% sales tax on the $110 subtotal ($6.60), for $116.60 at the register. The $100 is only an illustration, so check the live menu for real prices. Both taxes are statewide, and Michigan has no county or city sales tax on top.

Where Can You Use Cannabis in Michigan?

On private property, with the owner's permission: your home, your land or a friend's place. Parks, beaches, streets, parking lots and vehicles are all off limits, and hotels and rentals can ban it under their own rules. Consumption lounges exist only where a city has authorized them.

Medical vs. Adult-Use

Michigan runs both programs. Medical patients register with the state, can be 18 or older and skip the 10% excise tax. Adult-use is 21 and older with a photo ID and no card. Every Olswell store is adult-use only. The full comparison.

Visiting From Out of State

Staying Safe

• Start low and go slow. Many first-timers start edibles at 2.5 to 5 mg of THC and wait two hours before more.
• Know that effects vary with the person, tolerance and how you take it.
• Never drive impaired, and skip alcohol while you are trying cannabis.
• Store it away from children and pets.
• Avoid cannabis during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• High-THC products can cause anxiety or paranoia in some people. Go lower if that is you.
