Where You Can Use Cannabis

• Your home. This is where most people use it, and it is the lowest-risk option.
• Land you own. A farm, acreage or a cabin counts as private property.
• Someone else's place, with permission. A friend's home or a private event on private property works as long as the owner says yes.
• Rentals, hotels and campsites, only if the property allows it. Many ban cannabis outright, so check the listing or ask management before you plan on it.

Where You Can't

• Parks, trails and beaches. State parks, local parks, hiking trails and public waterfront are public places.
• Streets, sidewalks and plazas. Anywhere outdoors that the public can walk up to.
• Parking lots. Mall, store and garage lots count as public, and that includes the parking lot at a dispensary.
• Playgrounds and sports fields.
• Any vehicle. Don't use cannabis in a car, parked or moving, driver or passenger. Rental agreements usually ban smoking of any kind, and public transit sets its own rules.

What a ticket looks like for public use depends on your city or township. Don't test it.

Hotels, Rentals and Campgrounds

Policies vary a lot. Many hotel chains ban smoking of any kind in rooms, small independent hotels sometimes allow it, and short-term rental hosts decide listing by listing. Breaking a property's rules can cost you a deposit or extra fees, or get you asked to leave. Call ahead or read the listing before you buy.

Are There Cannabis Consumption Lounges in Michigan?

Only where a city has authorized them. Michigan lets a municipality approve designated consumption areas that are closed to anyone under 21, so availability depends entirely on the town. • Work. Employers can keep a drug-free workplace and act on a failed test, even though cannabis is legal.

Tips for Using It Legally

• Know where you will use it before you buy, and get the owner's okay first.
• Vaping gives off less odor than smoking, and edibles give off none. Keep it discreet in residential areas.
• Don't use it around kids or people who haven't opted in.
• Never drive after using cannabis. How long impairment lasts varies by person and product, and a DUI applies even if the cannabis was bought legally.
