4/20 Cannabis Deals in Michigan: Celebrate Responsibly at Olswell

What does 4/20 mean?

4/20 is cannabis culture's shorthand for April 20 and for 4:20 in the afternoon. It grew from a high school inside joke in California into a yearly day of events, sales, and gatherings for adults who use cannabis. Plenty of people mark the day without using anything at all, so it is a holiday you can take or leave.

Where 4/20 came from

The most repeated story starts in 1971 in San Rafael, California. A group of high school friends, who called themselves the Waldos, agreed to meet at 4:20 PM to go looking for a cannabis crop they had heard was abandoned somewhere nearby. They never found it, but "4:20" stuck as their code for the meetup, then spread through California cannabis culture, and eventually the date became the holiday.

Michigan voters approved adult-use cannabis in 2018, so 4/20 here now plays out in a licensed, tested market where adults 21 and older can shop legally.

How to shop Olswell around 4/20

• Check the menu and the deals page the week of. Weekly deals and limited drops change by store, so we do not promise a 4/20 lineup in advance. The deals page and your store's live menu are where anything running will show.
• Know the standing deals. A quarter off your first visit, plus Happy Hour at Adrian (Friday 8AM-2PM and Sunday 8AM-12PM) and at Traverse City and Kalkaska (Monday 5-9 PM and Thursday 9AM-1PM). Grand Rapids does not run a Happy Hour.
• Go on a different day if you can. Holiday days tend to run busier at dispensaries. A day before or after, or a quieter hour, gets you a shorter wait.
• Build your list on the menu first. Inventory rotates by store, so pick a backup in case your first choice sells out.
• Order online and pick up in store. Orders are held until the end of the business day. Bring cash (every store has an ATM on-site) and a valid government-issued photo ID showing you are 21 or older. Olswell does not deliver.
• Watch the limits. Michigan allows up to 2.5 ounces per transaction, with no more than 15 grams of that as concentrate.

Celebrate responsibly

• Keep it private. Michigan does not allow cannabis consumption in public. Use your home or other private property, with the owner's permission.
• Plan your ride. Never drive impaired. Pick a sober driver, a ride service, or stay put.
• Start low if you are newer to it. Edibles can take an hour or two to kick in, so wait at least two hours before taking more. Our edibles guide explains the timing.
• Do not mix cannabis with alcohol. Together they can make the experience harder to predict. Keep them separate.
• Eat something and keep water nearby. An empty stomach and a dry mouth are the two most common ways a good night gets rougher.
• Store it out of reach. Keep cannabis away from kids and pets.

Common reactions people report include dry mouth, red eyes, a faster heartbeat, and for some people, anxious or paranoid feelings.
