How to Choose the Right Cannabis Vape Cartridge

What is inside the cartridge

• Distillate: A highly refined oil, usually clear to light gold, with high THC and little natural flavor. Many makers add terpenes back in, from the cannabis plant or from other plants, so check the label if flavor matters to you.
• Live resin: Made from fresh-frozen cannabis with a solvent, then purged. It usually keeps more of the plant's aroma and is often golden to amber.
• Live rosin: Solventless oil pressed from fresh-frozen material, with no chemical solvents. Many people choose it when flavor is the priority.

What is a 510-thread cartridge?

A 510-thread cartridge uses the standard screw-on connection most cartridges share, so most 510 batteries work with most 510 cartridges and you can swap either one on its own. Check the fit, since some batteries only take carts up to a certain diameter. Pod systems are different: a brand's pods only work with that brand's battery. Disposables put the battery and oil in one unit that you use and then toss.

Most regular users go with 510-thread for the flexibility. Pods can suit people who like a simple, matched setup. Disposables suit travel and one-time use, though they create more waste.

Picking a battery

If you buy a 510 cartridge, you need a battery to go with it.

• Fixed voltage: One heat setting, simple, and a good starting point.
• Variable voltage: Adjustable heat. Different settings change vapor and flavor.
• Auto-draw or button: Auto-draw fires when you inhale. A button gives you more control.
• Extras: USB or magnetic charging, a preheat function, and a size that fits your pocket.

A basic variable-voltage 510 battery is a flexible first buy.

What to check on the label

• THC and CBD: Total milligrams or percentage. Higher THC is not the same as better, it is just stronger.

• Batch or lot number and test date: These give you traceability and show how fresh the batch is.
• Testing and producer: Michigan requires products sold at licensed stores to pass state lab testing. Ask the budtender what testing information is available.

Signs of a good cartridge

• Packaging: Sealed and tamper-evident, with clean printing and clear lab and producer information.
• Oil: Clean and consistent, with no floating bits or sediment. Distillate is clear to light gold, and live resin or rosin is golden to amber.
• Hardware: A snug thread that is neither loose nor stiff, no leaking, and a chamber that looks well made.
• Brand: A producer with consistent reviews and lab info you can find.

Using and caring for a cartridge

• Start low. Take one or two short puffs and wait a few minutes before you decide to take more.
• Store upright and cool. Heat and leaning on its side are the usual causes of leaks.
• Charge the battery fully before you use it, and keep it out of direct sun.
• Do not drive after using a THC cartridge.

Stay with licensed stores. Counterfeit cartridges exist on the illicit market, and they skip Michigan's lab testing.
