What goes into a pre-roll

• Standard: Whole flower buds or a grind of flower or shake, packed into paper.

• Blends: Two or more strains combined for a particular profile.

How do I tell a good pre-roll from a bad one?

Check what it is made from and how it is packed. Look for recognizable flower pieces instead of uniform dust, firm but not rock-hard packing, a fresh aroma, and clear label information like the THC percentage and batch number. Ask the budtender what is inside and how that product usually smokes.

A few more tells:

• Color: Lively and natural. Dull gray suggests old material.
• Smell: Aromatic and fresh. Musty or off smells are a red flag.
• Burn: An even burn with light gray ash is a good sign. Canoeing, where one side burns faster, suggests uneven packing.
• Label: THC percentage, batch number, and testing information. Michigan requires state lab testing for licensed products.
