Live Rosin vs. Live Resin: What's the Difference?

How each one is made

Live resin (solvent-based):

1. The cannabis is frozen fresh after harvest instead of dried first.
2. A solvent, usually butane or propane, dissolves the cannabinoids and terpenes.
3. The liquid is separated from the plant material.
4. The solvent is purged out, usually with vacuum and heat.
5. What is left is a sticky concentrate, often in a sauce, badder, or sugar texture.

Live rosin (solventless):

1. The cannabis is frozen fresh after harvest instead of dried first.
2. The frozen material is washed in ice water to separate the resin heads (hash), and the hash is dried.
3. The dried hash is pressed with heat and pressure, which squeezes the resin out as a liquid with no solvents.
4. The rosin is collected and cooled into its final texture.

Rosin made from ice water hash is called hash rosin. It is the same solventless idea with one more step.

Flavor and texture

• Live resin: Strong terpene character from the fresh-frozen start, with a wide range of textures. Some people notice a slight edge from the solvent process, but well-made live resin tastes excellent.
• Live rosin: Many people prefer its flavor because no solvent touches the plant. Texture runs from creamy to saucy to a firmer badder, and it is often translucent to golden.

For a casual shopper the gap can be small. Concentrate fans tend to care about it more.

Why does live rosin cost more?

Live rosin usually takes more starting material per gram of finished product, more hands-on labor, and specialized presses, and it is often made in smaller batches. Live resin uses solvent extraction, which is faster and more efficient. Prices vary by store and batch, so compare both on the live menu.

Testing and safety

Both have to pass Michigan's state lab testing before they reach the shelf. Concentrates are screened for potency, contaminants, and leftover solvents. A well-made live resin should show little to no residual solvent, and a result that does not is a reason to skip the product. Rosin has no solvent to purge in the first place. Check the batch information and ask the budtender for the testing details.

Live resin or live rosin: how to choose

Choose live resin if you:

• Want a solvent-based concentrate with a wide range of textures
• Like variety and a long track record
• Are comparing price and potency

Choose live rosin if you:

• Care most about flavor and aroma
• Prefer solventless products on principle
• Want a product made with heat, pressure, and no chemical solvents
