Michigan Cannabis Laws: What's Legal and What's Not

What Adults 21+ Can Do

Michigan voters approved adult use in 2018, and the day-to-day rules come down to a short list:

• Buy from a licensed retailer with a valid government-issued photo ID.
• Carry up to 2.5 ounces in public, with no more than 15 grams of that as concentrate.
• Keep up to 10 ounces at home.
• Grow up to 12 plants per home for personal use, in a locked space that can't be seen from a public place. Landlords can set their own rules, so check your lease first.
• Use it on private property with the owner's permission.

Products at licensed stores are lab tested, and the label shows the THC content and a batch number. That is reason enough to buy from a licensed store and nowhere else.

What Is Not Allowed

• Using cannabis in public. Parks, beaches, streets, sidewalks and anywhere else the public has access are off limits. Some cities add their own rules.
• Driving impaired. Never, in any vehicle.
• Using it in a vehicle. Transport it sealed in the trunk or a closed glove box, never open in the passenger area.
• Selling without a license. Only licensed stores can sell.
• Carrying more than the limit. Going over can bring a fine, and going well over can become a criminal charge.
• Buying or having it if you are under 21.
• Crossing a state line with it. This is a federal crime, even between two states where adult use is legal. What Ohio visitors need to know.

Where Can You Use Cannabis in Michigan?

On private property, with the owner's permission: your home, land you own, or a friend's place. Public use is not allowed, and hotels, rentals and campgrounds can ban it under their own rules. Consumption lounges exist only where a city has authorized them. Where you can and can't use cannabis, place by place.

Can You Drive After Using Cannabis?

No. Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal in Michigan, and that includes cars, boats, snowmobiles and off-road vehicles. Penalties can include fines, license consequences and jail time. How long impairment lasts varies by person and product, so line up a sober ride before you use.

Work and Rentals

Legal does not mean protected at work. Employers can still test, keep a drug-free workplace and act on a failed test. Landlords can ban smoking and growing on their property too, which is why the lease matters.

Medical and Adult-Use Are Separate
