Out-of-State Visitors' Guide to Buying Cannabis in Michigan

What You Need to Buy

• A valid government-issued photo ID showing you are 21 or older. A driver's license or state ID from any state works, and so does a passport or a military ID. Michigan applies the same ID rules to out-of-state IDs.

How Much Can You Buy?

The same as Michigan residents: up to 2.5 ounces per transaction, with no more than 15 grams of that as concentrate, and no more than 2.5 ounces on you in public. Adult-use purchases also carry a 10% excise tax plus 6% sales tax. Purchase limits in detail.

Can I Take Michigan Cannabis Home?

No. Crossing a state line with cannabis is a federal crime, even between two states where adult use is legal, and that includes Ohio, Indiana and Wisconsin. Penalties are federal and can be serious. Use what you buy before you leave, and don't buy more than you will finish in Michigan.

Where Can You Use It While Visiting?

Only on private property with the owner's permission. Parks, beaches, streets and vehicles are out, and so are hotels or rentals that don't allow it, and many don't. • Decide where you will use it before you buy, and don't assume your hotel allows it.
