Chicago to Michigan Cannabis Road Trip - Complete Guide

I-94 is the spine of this trip. Head north and east out of Chicago, run toward the Michigan-Indiana border, and let it curve northeast into Michigan.

The Route: Chicago to Michigan via I-94

I-94 is the spine of this trip. Head north and east out of Chicago, run toward the Michigan-Indiana border, and let it curve northeast into Michigan.

It's an easy drive: mostly highway, well-signed, predictable. Leaving Chicago can get thick around the Dan Ryan, but once you clear the metro it opens up. Grand Rapids sits about 150 miles out.

Option 1: Grand Rapids Stop (2.5 Hours)

Want quality cannabis without burning a whole day? Point it straight at Olswell Grand Rapids on 28th Street SE. I-94 hands off to I-96 inside Michigan, and 28th Street is the main retail run through Grand Rapids.

Off I-96, take the exit toward 28th Street Southeast and head south. We're right on the strip, easy to spot, well-signed, plenty of parking. About 2.5 hours from Chicago under normal conditions.

This is a clean half-day. Drive up in the morning, shop for 30 minutes, grab lunch, roll home. Back by dinner.

Grand Rapids carries the full lineup: RKIVE Reserve solventless and premium flower from the Adrian lab, Play, and The Limit. Real selection, real quality, and 25% off your first visit.

Option 2: Full Northern Michigan Road Trip (4-5 Hours)

Got a full day or an overnight? Push past Grand Rapids and keep going north. This is the version that's more than a shopping run, it's Michigan at its best.

From I-94 out of Chicago, roll past Grand Rapids and stay on I-96 as it bends northeast. Run I-96 toward Cadillac, then pick up US-131 north toward Kalkaska and Traverse City. This stretch is where the state turns gorgeous.

Chicago to Kalkaska or Traverse City lands at 4-5 hours depending on traffic and exactly where in Chicagoland you start. Long day. Worth it.

Multi-Store Tour Strategy

Here's how to run the whole tour:

Stop 1: Grand Rapids (Optional)

Doing the full northern route? Hit Grand Rapids first: shop, grab lunch, then keep heading north. You get a major metro store and you clear the Chicago sprawl before the long stretch.

Or skip it and drive straight to Kalkaska or Traverse City. Both work.

Stop 2: Kalkaska (4-4.5 Hours from Chicago)

Kalkaska is your first real stop heading Up North, at 102 Northland Plz in an easy-to-navigate plaza.

This is the hub for Northern Michigan cannabis shopping. Torch Lake is right there, Grayling is 30 minutes south, Traverse City is 25 minutes north. Shop Olswell Kalkaska, grab lunch, stretch your legs. Small town, real one.

Stop 3: Traverse City (25 Minutes from Kalkaska)

Traverse City is the crown jewel up here. Olswell sits at 728 E Front St, downtown with Grand Traverse Bay right there. The town is beautiful and genuinely thriving, not corporate-thriving, and it's worth 2-3 hours.

Shop, walk Front Street, grab dinner somewhere local, soak in the water views. Time it for sunset and the bay puts on a show.

Why Michigan Cannabis Beats Illinois

Pricing

Illinois runs roughly 15-25% higher than Michigan. A $60 product in Illinois might be $45-50 here. Spread across a real cart, that adds up, and Olswell's first-time welcome (25% off in Grand Rapids, or a spend-based free Play gift at the northern stores) tips it further in your favor.

RKIVE Reserve Quality

RKIVE Reserve is our connoisseur tier, solventless hash rosin and premium flower made in-house at the Adrian lab. Every product carries full lab results: potency, cannabinoid and terpene profiles, contamination testing. You know exactly what you're getting. Illinois has options, but this level of consistency and transparency is hard to match.

Farm-to-Table Selection

Michigan's market is full of small, independent growers selling straight through stores like ours. You'll find local craft cannabis with real character, the kind of stuff that doesn't show up on a big corporate shelf in Illinois. Grown here, made here, sold here.

Lower Taxes

Michigan's cannabis tax structure runs lower than Illinois, and that gap flows straight through to the price you pay. For reference, Michigan rec carries a 10% excise plus 6% sales tax, roughly 16% all in. You feel the difference at the register.

Timing Your Trip

Summer is gorgeous but packed. June through August, the north fills with tourists and you'll feel it on the roads and in the stores. Fall (September to October) is the sweet spot: great weather, thinner crowds, and foliage that's genuinely worth the drive.

Winter is doable but a project. The roads are well-kept (Michigan does not mess around on snow removal), but you're trading for short days, cold, and weather that changes its mind. Spring (April to May) is pleasant with the occasional rain.

For a Chicago run, fall wins. Good weather, fewer people, and scenery that turns the drive into part of the trip.

Drive Time Breakdowns

  • Chicago to Grand Rapids: 2.5 hours via I-94/I-96
  • Chicago to Kalkaska: 4-4.5 hours via I-94, I-96, US-131
  • Chicago to Traverse City: 4.5-5 hours via I-94, I-96, US-131
  • Grand Rapids to Kalkaska: 1.5 hours via US-131
  • Kalkaska to Traverse City: 25 minutes via US-131

What to Bring

Valid ID: driver's license, passport, or state ID. You must be 21+. Bring cash or have a card ready.

A cooler or insulated bag keeps flower fresh on the longer haul. Pack snacks and water too, since gas-station stops eat your clock.

Bring a camera or your phone. Northern Michigan is honestly beautiful, especially around Traverse City or out near Sleeping Bear Dunes.

Critical Transportation Rules

What you buy in Michigan gets used in Michigan. Carrying cannabis across a state line, Illinois included, is a federal offense. No gray area here. The fact that you're just driving home to Chicago doesn't change it.

That's the reality of a multi-state run. Buy in Michigan, use in Michigan, or finish it before you cross the border. Don't trade a good deal for a federal charge.

The clean way to handle it: buy what you'll actually enjoy over the weekend, and leave it at that. Shipping it home is federally problematic too, so just shop responsibly inside Michigan.

Never Drive Impaired

Never drive under the influence of cannabis. Impaired driving is illegal and dangerous, and it's no joke on I-94, which moves fast and runs heavy with trucks. Save your cannabis for after you've arrived.

Chicago to Michigan and back, the wheel stays sober. No exceptions.

Age Disclaimer

You must be 21 or older to buy or consume cannabis in Michigan. Possession under 21 is illegal. Always carry valid ID.

Making It a Real Road Trip

Don't reduce this to a supply run. Make it Michigan. Stop in the good towns, eat somewhere local, let the scenery do its thing. The north is genuinely beautiful, and Traverse City alone is worth the trip.

A proper weekend: leave Chicago Friday afternoon, hit Traverse City by dinner, enjoy the town, shop Saturday morning, explore Saturday afternoon, drive home Sunday. Or keep it tight as a day trip: out early, Grand Rapids by lunch, shop, home by dinner.

Either way, the drive earns it on price, quality, and the view out the windshield.

Why This Works for Chicago Cannabis Shoppers

Two to five hours of driving buys you meaningfully better prices and product. Olswell's first-time welcome (25% off in Grand Rapids, or a free Play gift up north) basically covers the gas. RKIVE Reserve's lab-tested solventless and flower outrun the comparable Illinois shelf, and the north is pretty enough that the drive stops feeling like an errand.

Run it once and you'll get why so many Chicago-area shoppers keep making the trip.
