Chicago to Michigan Cannabis Road Trip: Route and Rules

The route

From Chicago, head east on I-94 into Michigan. Traffic can be heavy leaving the city, especially around the Dan Ryan, and it eases once you clear the metro area. From Benton Harbor, I-196 leads north to Grand Rapids. These are road miles from downtown Chicago, so use your navigation app for the live drive time.

Option 1: Grand Rapids, about 178 miles

Olswell Grand Rapids is at 1940 28th St SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49508. At roughly 178 miles each way, plan it as a full day, not a quick errand. Make it an overnight or a weekend in Michigan rather than a same-day round trip: shop once you arrive, keep the purchase at a Michigan place where cannabis is allowed, and finish it before you leave, since it cannot cross the state line.

Option 2: Northern Michigan, about 311 to 317 miles

If you have a full day plus an overnight, keep going north. Kalkaska is about 311 miles from downtown Chicago by road and Traverse City is about 317. From Grand Rapids, US-131 runs north through Cadillac to Kalkaska, about 141 miles.

• Kalkaska is at 102 Northland Plz, in a retail plaza. Traverse City is about 24 miles from there by road, and Grayling is about 27.
• Traverse City is at 728 E Front St, downtown. Worth a few hours on foot, with Front Street restaurants and shops close by.

Doing both? Kalkaska first, then Traverse City, is a short hop.

Order ahead, then pick up

Order on the store's live menu and pick up in store: Grand Rapids, Kalkaska or Traverse City. You pay cash at pickup, and there is an ATM on-site. Orders are held until the end of the business day, which helps on a long drive. Inventory rotates, so check the live menu for what is in stock. Olswell does not deliver.

Michigan adult-use purchases carry a 10% excise tax plus 6% sales tax, and a single purchase is capped at 2.5 ounces, with no more than 15 grams of that as concentrate.

What to bring

• A valid government-issued photo ID showing you are 21 or older. Illinois and other out-of-state IDs are fine.
• Cash.
• Water and snacks for the drive, since gas stops add time.

The rule that matters most

Cannabis bought in Michigan must stay in Michigan. Carrying it across state lines, including back into Illinois or through Indiana, is a federal offense, even between two states where it is legal. Plan to buy only what you will use in Michigan, on private property such as a rental or lodging that allows it. If that does not fit your trip, skip buying.

Do not drive impaired

Do not use cannabis before you drive, and do not use it in the car. The drive from Chicago to Michigan and back has to be sober both ways. Use it only after you have arrived somewhere private and finished driving for the day.

Timing your trip

June through August is the busy stretch Up North, with traffic on the roads and in stores. September and October are quieter, with fall color. Winter is possible but short on daylight, and conditions can be rough. Spring is pleasant but can be wet.
