Why Kalkaska for a snowmobile trip

Kalkaska sits in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula, where winter brings snow and a riding season. Conditions change year to year, so check trail reports before you travel. Trails and route planning

Michigan maintains an interconnected snowmobile trail system. Use the DNR maps to find routes near Kalkaska and to check grooming and closures. Local resorts and lodge operators can also help, and so can trail-mapping apps. Plan your routes before you start, and plan where you will stop for lunch and fuel.

A riding day

• Morning: breakfast at your lodge or in Kalkaska, fuel up, check gear and the trail report.
• Midday: lunch at a trail-side stop or back at the lodge.
• Afternoon: more riding.
• Late afternoon: back to the lodge, gear off, rest.
• Evening: dinner at the lodge or a local restaurant.

Rentals and what to wear

If you do not own a sled, outfitters in the area may offer rentals. Ask each outfitter what the rental includes, and confirm pricing and requirements directly. Plan for:

• Insulated jacket and pants, winter boots, gloves and a helmet
• Layers you can add or shed
• Goggles for wind and snow
• Hand warmers
• Sunscreen, since snow reflects sunlight
• Water and snacks for trail breaks

Lodging and food

Some resorts cater to snowmobilers, with sled parking and trail access from the lodging. Standard hotels and motels in the Kalkaska area also serve riders, and cabin rentals show up on Airbnb and VRBO. Confirm amenities and policies with each property.

Check cannabis policies before you book. Most hotels prohibit it, and some vacation rentals allow it in private areas. Read the listing and contact the host.

Some restaurants sit right on popular trails and can be reached by sled. Kalkaska itself has casual restaurants and diners. Check current listings and hours.

Using cannabis at your lodging

• Private property only. Never on a trail, at a restaurant, in a parking lot or anywhere outside private lodging.
• Never before riding. Do not operate a snowmobile after using cannabis. Cold, speed and winter conditions make impairment dangerous.
• After everything else. If you use it at all, do it once riding and driving are finished for the day.
• Follow the lodging's rules. Some lodges prohibit it, and others allow it in certain spaces.

When to go

Riding depends on snow. December through February is the most reliable stretch, with the busiest trails and lodges. November and March are shoulder months with variable snow.
