How the first-visit discount works

1. Pick a store. Adrian, Grand Rapids, Traverse City, and Kalkaska all offer it.
2. Look at the live menu. You can order online for pickup or walk in and shop the counter. Inventory rotates by store, so the menu shows what that store has.
3. Bring ID and cash. Every Olswell store is cash only, with an ATM on-site.
4. Say it is your first visit. The budtender takes it from there.
5. Pick up in store. Online orders are held until the end of the business day.

If you are ordering ahead, ask your store how the discount is applied to your order before you place it.

What to bring

You need one thing for the discount and for any cannabis purchase in Michigan: a valid government-issued photo ID that shows you are 21 or older. A driver's license from any state, a state ID, a passport, or a military ID all work. If you are not sure your ID qualifies, ask the store before you make the trip.

Michigan requires a store to check ID on every sale, discounted or not, and the person buying has to be the person on the ID. Bring cash too. There is an ATM on-site if you need it.

What should I buy first?

Start with something you can control and take a little at a time. Flower, pre-rolls, and low-dose edibles are the easiest first picks, because you can start small and wait to see how you feel. Skip concentrates until you know your tolerance. Tell the budtender what you want from the experience and they will steer you.

• Flower: An eighth (3.5 grams) is plenty to learn on. Ask about lower-THC options, since the THC percentage is on the label and a lower number is easier to pace on a first try. Our indica vs. sativa guide explains why the strain label is only a starting point.
• Pre-rolls: No rolling skills needed. Play makes infused pre-rolls, which usually run stronger than a standard one, so ask for a standard pre-roll if this is your first time.
• Edibles: Michigan caps an edible at 10 mg of THC per serving. Start with 2.5 to 5 mg, wait at least two hours before taking more, and read the edibles guide first. Play carries everyday gummies.

• "What would you pick for someone new?" Tell them whether you want to smoke, vape, or eat something, and whether you want to feel relaxed or stay clear-headed.
• "What is the difference between Play and The Limit?" Play is the everyday brand: gummies, infused pre-rolls, rosin carts, and concentrates. The Limit is the value brand: ounce deals, bulk flower, and limited drops.
• "How much should I start with?" Small. You can always come back for more.
• "How long until I feel it?" Inhaled products take minutes. Edibles can take an hour or two. Waiting is the whole trick.
