What RSO Is

RSO, short for Rick Simpson Oil, is a thick, dark whole-plant extract made by soaking cannabis in a solvent and then evaporating the solvent off. It keeps the cannabinoids and terpenes that were in the plant, and it is very concentrated. A piece the size of a grain of rice can be a meaningful dose, so read the THC on the label of the product in your hand, because RSO products differ. Depending on the product, the label may describe taking it under the tongue, mixed into food or dabbed on a rig. Follow the directions on the package.

What a Tincture Is

A tincture is a liquid cannabis extract, usually alcohol-based, taken with a dropper under the tongue (sublingual) or swallowed. The label lists the THC and CBD in each dropper or milliliter, and that amount differs by product, so read it before you measure. Sublingual use is generally felt sooner than swallowing. A swallowed tincture behaves more like an edible, with a slower and longer onset, so wait at least two hours before taking more.

Choosing Between RSO and a Tincture

Choose RSO if you already have experience with concentrates and want a very strong whole-plant product. It is hard to measure precisely, and the flavor is strongly cannabis-forward.

Choose a tincture if you want to measure with a dropper and adjust in small steps. Tinctures also come with no smoke and little smell.

Either way, start with the smallest amount the label describes, wait, and do not drive. If you take medication or have a health condition, talk with a healthcare provider before using either one.
